RESUMO

Lithium (Li)-ion permeability of holey graphene (hG) for use as an electrically conducting scaffold in solid-state battery electrodes is explored through the means of a particle dynamics simulation model. While carbon materials do not typically exhibit Li-ion conductivity, the unique structural motif of hG, which consists of two-dimensional nanosheets with arrays of through-thickness holes, may present an opportunity for Li-ion conductors (i.e., solid electrolyte (SE) particles) to make contacts through the holes. In our model, the SE is presented as a system of hard elastic spheres conductive to Li-ions. The SE spheres are in contact with each other through compression between two plane current collectors. One hG layer is inserted between the current collectors and parallel to them. Randomly distributed circular holes in the hG allow for contact between the SE particles on both sides of the hG layer. By solving the Li-ion conducting network formed between the electrodes through the contact points of all the particles, the overall conductivity of the system was calculated as a function of SE particle size and the size and number of the hG holes (i.e., hG porosity). A critical ratio of around 4 between the SE particle size and the pore size was found. Below this critical value, the hG layer becomes practically transparent for Li-ions. This study helps to guide the design of highly efficient solid-state electrode composition and architectures using hG as a unique electrically conducting scaffold.

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal stomas are created for distinct clinical conditions. They may involve the small bowel (ileostomy) or the large bowel (colostomy), depending on the objective or site of the stoma. Intestinal stomas may be temporary or permanent; they cause loss control of intestinal transit due to the absence of a sphincter that regulates its exit, provoking a continuous passage of fecal matter through the stoma. Within the environment of the ostomized patients, there are several important complications involving their quality of life. CASE PRESENTATION: The Intestinal Valve Type Artificial Sphincter (VITEA) device is placed in a patient diagnosed with cervical cancer, who has a vaginal-rectum fistula that requires a definitive colostomy. DISCUSSION: Intestinal stomas have been validated for over a century. We present the case with a similar complication rate to those described after performing a stoma with conventional open technique in terms of quality of life and cost-benefit ratio. The proportion of complications and the quality of life found in the ostomized patient with the VITEA* device is acceptable, and also eliminates the colostomy bags, providing the function of an artificial sphincter by everting the mucosa on the same device. No complications were found during the follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: The results from this proposal will allow to evaluate the safety and efficacy profile associated with a stomal bags.

We present a simple and facile method to synthesize nanoplatelets of 2D Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) perovskites of the type (CH3(CH2)3NH3)2(CH3NH3)Pb2I7 where n = 2. The 2D RP nanoplatelets are synthesized from bulk 2D RP crystals via a reflux pre-treatment mediated-ultrasonication method. The as-synthesized 2D RP nanoplatelets are highly air-stable even after two months of storage under an ambient atmosphere. The bulk 2D RP crystals and 2D RP nanoplatelets are characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Kelvin probe force microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence, time correlated single photon counting measurement, etc. A significant blue shift in the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectrum, high photoluminescence in the UV region, and the modified work function of the nanoplatelets indicate a strong quantum confinement effect. The quantum confinement in the nanoplatelets is further confirmed using XPS. A photodetector fabricated using these 2D RP nanoplatelets exhibits a high photodetectivity of 3.09 × 1010 Jones.

Organic-inorganic halide perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) constitute an attractive class of materials for many optoelectronic applications. However, their charge transport properties are inferior to materials like graphene. On the other hand, the charge generation efficiency of graphene is too low to be used in many optoelectronic applications. Here, we demonstrate the development of ultrathin phototransistors and photonic synapses using a graphene-PQD (G-PQD) superstructure prepared by growing PQDs directly from a graphene lattice. We show that the G-PQDs superstructure synchronizes efficient charge generation and transport on a single platform. G-PQD phototransistors exhibit excellent responsivity of 1.4 × 108 AW-1 and specific detectivity of 4.72 × 1015 Jones at 430 nm. Moreover, the light-assisted memory effect of these superstructures enables photonic synaptic behavior, where neuromorphic computing is demonstrated by facial recognition with the assistance of machine learning. We anticipate that the G-PQD superstructures will bolster new directions in the development of highly efficient optoelectronic devices.

Graphene electrode-based supercapacitors are in high demand due to their superior electrochemical characteristics. A major bottleneck of using the supercapacitors for commercial applications lies in their inferior electrode cycle life. Herein, a simple and facile method to fabricate highly efficient supercapacitor electrodes using pristine graphene sheets vertically stacked and electrically connected to the carbon fibers which can result in vertically aligned graphene-carbon fiber nanostructure is developed. The vertically aligned graphene-carbon fiber electrode prepared by electrophoretic deposition possesses a mesoporous 3D architecture which enabled faster and efficient electrolyte-ion diffusion with a gravimetric capacitance of 333.3 F g-1 and an areal capacitance of 166 mF cm-2 . The electrodes displayed superlong electrochemical cycling stability of more than 100 000 cycles with 100% capacitance retention hence promising for long-lasting supercapacitors. Apart from the electrochemical double layer charge storage, the oxygen-containing surface moieties and α-Ni(OH)2 present on the graphene sheets enhance the charge storage by faradaic reactions. This enables the assembled device to provide an excellent gravimetric energy density of 76 W h kg-1 with a 100% capacitance retention even after 1000 bending cycles. This study opens the door for developing high-performing flexible graphene electrodes for wearable energy storage applications.

RESUMO

Aerogels are one of the most interesting materials of the 21st century owing to their high porosity, low density, and large available surface area. Historically, aerogels have been used for highly efficient insulation and niche applications, such as interstellar particle capture. Recently, aerogels have made their way into the composite universe. By coupling nanomaterial with a variety of matrix materials, lightweight, high-performance composite aerogels have been developed for applications ranging from lithium-ion batteries to tissue engineering materials. In this paper, the current status of aerogel composites based on nanomaterials is reviewed and their application in environmental remediation, energy storage, controlled drug delivery, tissue engineering, and biosensing are discussed.

CHD is becoming an increasing priority worldwide, as it is one of the main causes of death in low- and middle-income countries lately. This study aims to evaluate the association between beverage consumption patterns and the risk of CHD among Mexican adult population. We performed a cross-sectional analysis using data from 6640 adults participating in the Health Workers' Cohort Study. Factor analysis was performed to identify beverage patterns using sex-specific Framingham prediction algorithms to estimate CHD risk. The prevalence of moderate to high CHD risk was 17·8 %. We identified four major beverage consumption patterns, which were categorised as alcohol, coffee/tea, soft drinks and low-fat milk. We observed a lower risk of CHD (OR=0·61; 95 % CI 0·46, 0·80; and OR=0·58; 95 % CI 0·43, 0·79, respectively) among participants in the upper quintile of alcohol or low-fat milk consumption compared with those in the bottom quintile. In contrast, a higher consumption of soft drinks was positively associated with CHD risk (OR=1·64; 95 % CI 1·21, 2·20) when compared with other extreme quintiles. Finally, coffee/tea consumption was not significantly associated with CHD risk. Our findings suggest that a beverage pattern characterised by a higher intake of sugar-sweetened beverages may be associated with an increased risk of CHD among the Mexican adult population, whereas patterns of moderate alcohol intake and low-fat milk may be associated with a reduced risk.

Core-shell nanofibers containing poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) and manganese oxide nanoparticles as the core and polypyrrole (PPy) as the shell were fabricated through electrospinning the solution of PAA and manganese ions (PAA/Mn2+). The obtained nanofibers were stabilized by Fe3+ through the interaction between Fe3+ ions and carboxylate groups. Subsequent oxidation of Mn2+ by KMnO4 produced uniform manganese dioxide (MnO2) nanoparticles in the fibers. A PPy shell was created on the fibers by immersing the fibers in a pyrrole solution where the Fe3+ ions in the fiber polymerized the pyrrole on the fiber surfaces. In the MnO2@PAA/PPy core-shell composite fibers, MnO2 nanoparticles function as high-capacity materials, while the PPy shell prevents the loss of MnO2 during the charge/discharge process. Such a unique structure makes the composite fibers efficient electrode materials for supercapacitors. The gravimetric specific capacity of the MnO2@PAA/PPy core-shell composite fibers was 564 F/g based on cyclic voltammetry curves at 10 mV/s and 580 F/g based on galvanostatic charge/discharge studies at 5 A/g. The MnO2@PAA/PPy core-shell composite fibers also present stable cycling performance with 100% capacitance retention after 5000 cycles.

Bulk polymer-derived ceramic (PDC) composites of SiCO with an embedded graphene network were produced using graphene-coated poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) foams as templates. The pyrolysis of green bodies containing cross-linked polysiloxane, PVA foams, and graphene oxide (GO) resulted in the decomposition of PVA foams, compression of GO layers, and formation of graphitic domains adjacent to GO within the SiCO composite, leading to SiCO composites with an embedded graphene network. The SiCO/GO composite, with about 1.5% GO in the ceramic matrix, offered an increase in the electrical conductivity by more than 4 orders of magnitude compared to that of pure SiCO ceramics. Additionally, the unique graphene network in the SiCO demonstrated a drop in the observed thermal conductivity of the composite (∼0.8 W m-1 K-1). Young's modulus of the as-fabricated SiCO/GO composites was found to be around 210 MPa, which is notably higher than the reported values for similar composites fabricated from only ceramic precursors and PVA foams. The present approach demonstrates a facile and cost-effective method of producing bulk PDC composites with high electrical conductivity, good thermal stability, and low thermal conductivity.

With a goal of identifying a new scalable source for cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), we successfully isolated CNCs from a sustainable, non-invasive grass, Miscanthus x. Giganteus (MxG). Subjecting MxG stalks to base hydrolysis, bleaching and acid hydrolysis allowed access to cellulose nanocrystals (MxG-CNC) in high yields. X-ray diffraction studies showed the crystallinity of the MxG-CNCs increased with subsequent treatment conditions (>90% after HCl hydrolysis). Transmission electron microscopy showed that the MxG-CNC exhibit relatively high aspect ratios (60-70), and small angle neutron scattering showed the crystals were ribbon-like with a width and thickness of 8.5 and 2.8nm respectively. As expected, thermomechanical analysis of nanocomposites fabricated with carboxylic acid functionalized MxG-CNC (MxG-CNC-COOH) and PVAc showed an increase in modulus (above Tg) as filler content was increased. Comparing the properties to PVAc nanocomposites containing CNCs from wood showed at least as good, if not slightly better, reinforcement at the same loading level.

OBJECTIVE: This paper describes the study design and baseline characteristics of the study population, including the first 30 829 women who enrolled in the Forwarding Research for Improved Detection and Access for Cervical Cancer Screening and Triage (FRIDA Study). This is a large population based study that is evaluating the performance and cost-effectiveness of different triage strategies for high-risk HPV (hrHPV) positive women in Mexico. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The target population is more than 100 000 women aged 30 to 64 years who attend the Cervical Cancer Screening Program in 100 health centers in the state of Tlaxcala, Mexico. Since August 2013, all women in the region have been invited to enroll in the study. The study participants are evaluated to determine hrHPV infection using the Cobas 4800 HPV test. The HPV-16/18 genotyping and cytology triage strategies are performed as reflex tests in all hrHPV-positive participants. Women with a positive HPV-16/18 test and/or abnormal cytology (atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance or worse, ASCUS+) are referred for colposcopy evaluation, where a minimum of four biopsies and an endocervical sample are systematically collected. Histologic confirmation is performed by a standardized panel of pathologists. RESULTS: Among the 30 829 women who have been screened, the overall prevalence of hrHPV is 11.0%. The overall prevalence of HPV16 and HPV18 are 1.5% and 0.7%, respectively. Cytological abnormalities (ASCUS+) were detected in 11.8% of the hrHPV-positive women. A total of 27.0% (920/3,401) of the hrHPV-positive women were referred to colposcopy because of a positive HPV16/18 test and/or abnormal reflex cytology, (31.6% had only ASCUS+, 53.6% were HPV16/18 positive with a normal cytology result, and 9.5% were positive to both triage tests). CONCLUSION: The results of this study will help policy makers and health service providers establish the best practices for triage in cervical cancer screening in Mexico and other countries.

Resumen Objetivo: El objetivo de este artículo es describir el diseño del estudio FRIDA y las características basales de las primeras 30 829 mujeres tamizadas. El estudio FRIDA (Forwarding Research for Improved Detection and Access for Cervical Cancer Screening and Triage) es un estudio de demostración con base poblacional diseñado para evaluar el desempeño y costo-efectividad de diferentes alternativas de triage en mujeres VPH de alto riesgo (VPHar) positivas bajo condiciones reales de un programa de tamizaje para cáncer cervical en México. Material y métodos: La población objetivo la conforman poco más de 100 000 mujeres de 30 a 64 años que asisten al programa de detección oportuna de cáncer cervical en alguno de los 100 centros de salud de la jurisdicción sanitaria 1 de Tlaxcala. Desde agosto de 2013, todas las mujeres son invitadas al estudio. Las participantes del estudio son tamizadas para determinar la infección con VPHar mediante la prueba VPHar Cobas 4800. Se realizan las pruebas de triage de tipificación de VPH16/18 y citología en todas las mujeres con resultados VPHar positivos. Las mujeres con un resultado positivo a VPH16/18 y/o citología anormal (células escamosas atípicas de resultado incierto o peor: ASCUS+) son referidas a evaluación colposcópica, seguida de una colección sistemática de un mínimo de cuatro biopsias cervicales y un cepillado endocervical. La confirmación histológica se lleva a cabo por un panel de patólogos. Resultados Un total de 30 829 mujeres han sido tamizadas, con una prevalencia de VPHar del 11.0%. La prevalencia global de VPH16 y VPH18 es 1.5% y 0.7%, respectivamente. Se detectó un 11.8% de anormalidades citológicas (ASCUS+). Entre las mujeres VPHar positivas, la prevalencia de un resultado de triage positivo (VPH16/18 o citología anormal) fue 27.0%, distribuido de la siguiente forma, 31.6% de éstos fueron sólo ASCUS+ VPH16/18 negativo, 53.6% fueron VPH 16/18 positivos y citología normal, y 9.5% positivos a ambas pruebas de triage. Conclusión: Los resultados de este estudio ayudarán tanto a los tomadores de decisiones como a los proveedores de servicios de salud a establecer la mejor estrategia de triage en programas de tamizaje de cáncer cervical basados en VPHar en México y en otros países.

The dielectric and other properties of a series of low-density polyimide block copolymer aerogels have been characterized. Two different anhydride-capped polyimide oligomers were synthesized: one from 2,2-bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride (6FDA) and 4,4'-oxidianiline (ODA) and the other from biphenyl-3,3',4,4'-tetracarboxylic dianhydride and ODA. The oligomers were combined with 1,3,5-triaminophenoxybenzene to form a block copolymer networked structure that gelled in under 1 h. The polyimide gels were supercritically dried to give aerogels with relative dielectric constants as low as 1.08. Increasing the amount of 6FDA blocks by up to 50% of the total dianhydride decreased the density of the aerogels, presumably by increasing the free volume and also by decreasing the amount of shrinkage seen upon processing, resulting in a concomitant decrease in the dielectric properties. In this study, we have also altered the density independent of fluorine substitution by changing the polymer concentration in the gelation reactions and showed that the change in dielectric due to density is the same with and without fluorine substitution. The aerogels with the lowest dielectric properties and lowest densities still had compressive moduli of 4-8 MPa (40 times higher than silica aerogels at the same density), making them suitable as low dielectric substrates for lightweight antennas for aeronautic and space applications.
